“The Roughneck” – Red Wing 8146 of the Heritage Collection!

Boot 8146, also known as the “Roughneck” Moc Toe Lug, is fashioned after one of Red Wing’s earliest work boot styles. These boots are what come to mind when you think of Red Wing work boots. These iconic classic mocs are built to exacting standards by artisan cobblers and craftsmen, using only the finest leathers and materials. That’s why we aren’t afraid to stand behind each and every pair that we make. Our Heritage boots  are special. They represent that soul and history of our company. They are a perfect marriage of form and function – and Boot 8146 is no exception.

Boot 8146, the “Roughneck” is a 6-inch moc toe. It is constructed from our Briar Oil Slick leather and features a Vibram Lug outsole. It is triple stitched and features Goodyear welt construction for long lasting durability.

We originally created this boot for the folks who put in their blood, sweat, and tears to construct the energy backbone of our country: oil rig workers. When we made this boot, the technology for oil extraction was new and wasn’t exactly designed with safety in mind. Working on an one of these oil rigs was considered to be one of the most dangerous jobs you could have – and this was in an era before OSHA. Only the hardest of men worked in this industry. These are the the guys you see in black and white pictures, with skin like beef jerky and and attitude to match. This appearance and disposition earned them the moniker “Roughnecks”. These men needed a boot that could match their nickname – and Red Wing 8146 was born. This was a boot that was tough, and looked tough. The Roughnecks loved it, and you will too. 

The workplace isn’t as anywhere near as dangerous as it used to be, and boot technology has advanced dramatically. There’s still a place for boots like our Roughnecks, though – on your feet when you’re trying to put your best foot forward! These boots conjure memories of a time where hard work was the only work. They make fantastic dress boots when you want to look your best.
